Writer’s Workshop: Career Changing

From this week’s prompts:

4.) If you could change career paths now and be anything you wanted to be…what would you be and why?

Once upon a time, long ago, if you had asked me what I wanted to be, I would have told you a “business woman”.  I will be honest, I had no idea what that even meant or what that person did.  To me, that just meant lots of money and success.  Even as I entered college, I had no idea what I was majoring in or why really (marketing).

Fast forward to today and I find that I have been working as a buyer for the past 7 years.  It’s not a bad job, but not something I had ever thought about doing.  While I don’t have any regrets, if I could go back to college and “do it all again”, I would have majored in History and become a history professor (specializing in the Civil War era).

I think it would be so rewarding working with college students who are just as interested as I am about this time period.  I love to read and watch anything I can on the subject.  It’s my passion and I would love to share it with others.

  1. I agree, I think teaching is a career I should have explored more after college. Teaching gives the opportunity to really make a difference in kid’s lives. There are countless stories of successful people pointing to one teacher in particular who believed in them and this belief propelled them to success.

I chose the third grade teacher blog prompt this week. But, I was torn about the career prompt. For some reason, I wish I had become a professional surfer and opened a surfing school. :)

  2. I LOVE the Civil War. That would be a job I would want, too. I actually am an English and History teacher. I’ve taught 9th, 10th and 12th and my specialty has mostly been Bible, Greeks, Romans and Middle Ages. Still, the Civil War era has always fascinated me and getting to teach that would be awesome.

  3. I started with the same dreams. But Econ101 scared the ever loving crap out of me. So I went into teaching. And everytime I think about life after the kids go back to school, I end up wanting to teach again. It’s never too late! :)
